1. Ronn
1. Ech froe mech, _______ et haut an der Kantin z’iesse gëtt.
a) ob b) wat c) wéi
Richteg ass b) Ech froe mech, wat et haut an der Kantin z’iesse gëtt. – I wonder what there is to eat in the canteen today.
Wat is used to refer to what is available without forming a direct question. Even though it appears inside a sentence, it is still expressing a “what question” rather than a yes/no uncertainty.
ob means whether and is used only when there are two possibilities (yes or no). That’s why it changes the meaning:
👉Ech froe mech, ob et haut en Dessert an der Kantin gëtt – I wonder whether there is a dessert in the canteen today. (yes or no)
2. Haut ass schéint Wieder, _______ ginn ech spadséieren.
a) an b) firwat c) dofir

You’ll also often hear soss in shops, zum Beipsill an der Bäckerei oder um Maart:
👉Soss nach eppes?
This is a fixed expression meaning Anything else? and is used when the seller checks if you want to add something else to your order.
4. Ech hu vill geléiert, _______ hunn ech den Examen net gepackt.
a) an b) allerdéngs c) well

5. Mäin Auto _______ net vill Besin, dofir hunn ech manner Käschten.

So this time I’ll say a Luxembourgish word and you’ll see if you can guess the meaning. Then I’ll use the word in a sentence, and finally I’ll explain it so you can check whether you were right.

2. Ronn
6. Aufgab
An example sentence: Et ass meng Aufgab, menge Kanner bei den Hausaufgaben ze hëllefen.
What do you think Aufgab means?
Eng Aufgab is sth you must do because it is your responsibility, your job or because it is the right thing to.
So the sentence Et ass meng Aufgab, menge Kanner bei den Hausaufgaben ze hëllefen means: It’s my responsibility to help my children with their homework
Let’s now practice the pronunciation: Aufgab.
And … in the example sentence I also used the word Hausaufgaben. Et ass meng Aufgab, menge Kanner bei den Hausaufgaben ze hëllefen.
What’s the difference?
- Aufgab (singular) = a task or responsibility (something you have to do in general)
- Hausaufgaben (plural) = homework (specific school exercises you have to do at home)
7. zefridden
An example sentence: Ech sinn zefridde mat mengem Resultat am Examen. – I am satisfied with my result in the exam.
What do you think zefridden means?
In Luxembourgish, zefridden means satisfied. It describes a calm, neutral feeling of approval not overly emotional, but positive.
We use it when:
- something meets our expectations but are not very excited about it: Ech sinn zefridden mat menger Aarbecht.. – I’m satisfied with my job.
- we are okay with a result or situation: De Client war zefridden mat eiser Zesummenaarbecht. – The client was satisfied with our collaboration.
8. Am Ufank
An example sentence: Am Ufank hat ech Problemer mat der Aussprooch, mee elo schwätzen ech méi kloer. – At the beginning I had problems with pronunciation, but now I speak more clearly.
Am Ufank means at the beginning / in the beginning.
It is used to describe how something was at the start of a process, experience, or situation.
It often contrasts the past with the present: what it was like at first and how it is now
👉Am Ufank vun der Reunioun hu mir d’Ziler fir de neie Projet virgestallt. – At the beginning of the meeting we presented the goals of the new project.
9. Oppassen op
An example sentence: Meng Mamm passt op meng Kanner op, wann ech um Büro sinn. – My mother looks after my children when I am at the office.
Oppassen op means to look after / to take care of / to watch someone or something.
op eppes / een oppassen = to take care of someone or something
Notice that: the verb is separable: passt … op: Meng Mamm passt op meng Kanner op
Now you’ve noticed that op appears twice: once as part of the separable verb and once before the object
➡️ passt op meng Kanner op
The op = a preposition and in this expression it is part of the meaning to look after someone/something.
👉Kanns du kuerz op mäin Hond oppassen? – Can you look after my dog for a moment?
10. Trotzdeem
An example sentence: Ech hu vill fir den Test geléiert, trotzdeem hunn ech en net gepackt. – I studied a lot for the test, nevertheless I didn’t pass it.
Trotzdeem means nevertheless or despite that So trotzdeem often introduces a result that goes against expectations.
And at B1 level, learners start using adverbs like trotzdeem to connect ideas in longer sentences.
Notice the word order:
After trotzdeem, the verb comes immediately after it: Trotzdeem hunn ech en net gepackt.
👉Et war immens kal an trotzdeem si mir spadséiere gaangen. – It was very cold, nevertheless we went for a walk.
