After building a solid foundation at CEFR Level A2, the next milestone is Level B1.
This is where many learners notice a significant breakthrough: you begin communicating more independently and expressing your own ideas with greater confidence.
Like all CEFR levels, B1 is part of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the internationally recognised standard used to describe language ability.

What Is Level B1?
B1 is the first level of independent language use.
At this stage, you can manage most situations you are likely to encounter in everyday life, at work, and while travelling. You can understand the main points of conversations, express opinions, describe experiences, and explain your plans and goals.
You can usually communicate successfully without needing constant help.
According to the CEFR, a B1 learner can:
- Understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar topics.
- Deal with most situations likely to arise while living or travelling.
- Produce simple, connected speech on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
- Describe experiences, events, ambitions, hopes, and future plans.
- Give reasons and explanations for opinions and decisions.
- Write straightforward texts about familiar subjects.

What Can You Do at B1 in Luxembourgish?
Typical B1 learners can usually:
- Participate in longer everyday conversations.
- Describe past experiences in greater detail.
- Explain future plans and personal goals.
- Express opinions and preferences.
- Give reasons for decisions.
- Handle many workplace conversations.
- Follow the main points of meetings and presentations when spoken clearly.
- Write emails and messages with greater confidence.
- Tell stories and describe events in a logical order.
- Understand the main ideas of television, podcasts, and articles on familiar topics.
At B1, communication becomes much more natural. You no longer rely entirely on prepared sentences-you begin creating your own.
How Long Does It Take to Reach B1?
There is no fixed number of study hours.
Progress depends on:
- the strength of your A1 and A2 foundations
- how consistently you study
- how often you actively speak Luxembourgish
- the quality of your learning materials
- regular exposure to the language
- your motivation and persistence
For many learners, B1 is where regular speaking practice becomes essential. The more you actively use the language, the faster your confidence grows.
Understanding the Three Stages of B1
Although the CEFR describes B1 as a single level, many Luxembourgish language programmes divide it into three stages: B1.1, B1.2, and B1.3.
This allows learners to progress step by step rather than trying to master everything at once.
- B1.1 focuses on expanding your vocabulary, improving fluency, and becoming more comfortable in everyday conversations.
- B1.2 develops your ability to discuss a wider variety of topics, express opinions more clearly, and communicate with greater accuracy.
- B1.3 prepares you to communicate confidently in more complex real-life and workplace situations while strengthening your grammar and overall fluency.
