Speaking Legal – Luxembourgish in Law & Compliance

Today’s lesson is for those of you working in law, legal departments, or compliance in Luxembourg. This is part of the new series of industry-specific Luxembourgish Language.

In legal settings, clarity and accuracy matter—but that doesn’t mean you need to speak without a single mistake.  It’s about making clear, respectful communication choices that strengthen your professional credibility.

Why Legal Luxembourgish Can Feel Intimidating

Legal vocabulary is often complex—even in your native language. Add Luxembourgish to the mix, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

But here’s the truth: in legal settings, how you express yourself really matters. It’s not just about speaking Luxembourgish, it’s about expressing yourself clearly and correctly.Whether you’re negotiating contracts, reviewing regulations, or communicating with clients, today’s five phrases will already give you a strong starting point.

Sample Dialogue – Internal Legal Review

Let’s imagine a very short conversation between two legal team members:

Kolleeg: Ass dëse Passage fir dech kloer a verständlech? Is this extract clear and understandable?

Juristin: Ech mengen e kéint méi präzis formuléiert ginn. I think it could be formulated more precisely.
Kolleeg: Gutt, da verbesseren ech elo d’Formuléierung. Good, then I’ll improve the wording now.

You can hear how even simple Luxembourgish makes the exchange feel more collaborative and locally grounded.

Your Practice Plan

Legal vocabulary can seem dry, but here’s how to make it stick:

  • Choose 5 terms related to your daily work—contracts, clauses, responsibilities.
  • Translate and write them out in context, using your real documents as examples.
  • Practice saying them aloud in a full sentence.
  • Pair up with a colleague to role-play short conversations.

You’ll sound more confident in no time. Just DO IT!
