In today’s lesson we’ll talk about how to speak with confidence in Luxembourgish about your home country or the country your family is from – naturally and with joy!
For many people living in Luxembourg, it’s completely normal to come from another country – or to have parents who do.
But still, it’s not always easy to talk about that freely in Luxembourgish.
Why not?
- Because people feel unsure about the vocabulary
- Because they don’t want to “make mistakes”
- Or because it feels scary to talk about something personal in a new language.
But here’s the reality: People want to get to know you.
They’re curious and positive when you share your stories. And those conversations actually strengthen your language!

Let’s now look at some practical examples you can use right away in conversations.
Saying where you're from:
- Ech kommen aus Portugal / der Ukraine / Marokko. – I come from Portugal Ukraine / Morocco.
- Mäi Mann an ech kommen aus Indien vu Goa. – My husband and I come from India from Goa
- Meng Elteren si vun Italien. – My parents are from Italy.
- Ech sinn zu Lëtzebuerg gebuer, mee meng Famill kënnt aus Polen. – I was born in Luxembourg, but my family comes from Poland
Saying something about the country:
- Et ass en immens schéint Land – mat Bierger a Mier, vill Geschicht… – It’s a very beautiful country – with mountains and sea, lots of history…
- Ech kommen aus Italien. D’Haaptstad ass Roum – eng wonnerschéin Stad bekannt fir seng Monumenter. I come from Italy. The capital is Roma – a wonderful city famous for its monuments.
- D’Iessen do ass super lecker – besonnesch… – The food there is really tasty – especially…
- D’Leit si ganz familiär / oppen / musikalesch… – The people are very family-oriented / open / musical…
Linking it to Luxembourg:
- Ech kommen aus Bulgarien, mee elo wunnen ech zu Lëtzebuerg. – I come from Bulgaria but now I live in Luxembourg
- Ech ginn ëmmer gären zeréck, mee ech hunn och gär mäi Liewen hei zu Lëtzebuerg. – I always love going back, but I also enjoy my life here.
- Meng Kanner wuesse mat béide Kulturen op. – My children grow up with both cultures.
- Ech probéieren, e bëssen Traditioun matzebréngen – besonnesch bei Fester. – I try to bring in some of our traditions – especially during celebrations.
- Zu Lëtzebuerg ass et méi roueg a méi international wéi bei mir doheem. – In Luxembourg it is calmer and more international than back home.
