Learn in this episode not only about the different events but also useful phrases you can use by attending one of the village festivals – Duerffester. And stay until the end as we will end the episode with a dialogue at the Schueberfouer.
🇱🇺 Nationalfeierdag – den 23. Juni
Luxembourg’s National Day actually celebrates the Grand Duke’s official birthday—but for most locals, it’s about pride, celebration, and community.
Den 22. Juni gëtt et an der Stad – On June 22 there is in the city:
- De Fakelzuch – Torchlight procession
- Concerten an d’Freedefeier – Concerts and the firework
Lokal Spezialitéiten fir ze iessen an ze drénken – local specialities to eat and drinks

🎡 d’Schueberfouer – Enn August bis Mëtt September
D’Fouer – that’s how native speaker call it – is Luxembourg’s largest annual funfair, dating back to 1340 which used to be at the very beginning Um Hellege Geescht Plateau – where we have now d’Cité Judiciaire. At that time it was a cattle and traditional market. Then d’Schueberfouer moved to its current location the Glacis at the end of the 19th century for more space and better facilities, accommodating the fair’s growth and the introduction of new attractions
Useful Phrases to use:
- Ech hu Loscht op Gromperekichelcher. Wou kann ech der kafen? – I’m craving potato fritters. Where can I buy some?
- Wëlls du mat mir op d’Riserad goen? – Do you want to go with me to the fairy wheel?
- Komm mir ginn op d’Achterbunn. – Let’s go on the roller coaster.
🎶 Fête de la Musique – Mëtt Juni
A music festival celebrated in the Luxembourg city at the Knuedler and around, with free outdoor concerts. Its purpose is to offer amateur and professional musicians the opportunity to perform free concerts in public spaces. This allows a wide audience to discover a variety of music of all genres, types, and languages.
Useful questions for conversation:
- Wat fir e Concert wëlls du herno lauschtere goen? – Which concert would you like to listen to afterwards?
- Gees du mat mir op d’Fête de la Musique? Are you coming with me to the Fête de la Musique?

🌻 Duerffester & Grillowender – Juni-September
In small towns, local associations often organize Grillowender (BBQ evenings) or Duerffester (village festivals). Those are casual, community-focused, and a great place to hear everyday Lëtzebuergesch
Useful questions & phrases
- Et richt no Grillwurscht. Ech kréien Honger. – It smells like grilled sausage – I’m getting hungry.
- Sidd dir aus dem Duerf? – Are you from the village?
- D’Duerf gefält mir. Et ass esou schéin hei. – I like the village. It’s so beautiful here.
